Who Are We?

Kim T. -
Computer studies teacher in Derry, NH for 6-8 graders.
An almost graduate with my M.Ed. with a concentration in technology education.
I have 3 children and a great husband.
I love to decorate my house, paint walls, walk, read about web 2.0, twitter, and belonging to a great network of web 2.0 teachers with awesome suggestions.
I firmly believe students in school should be able to experience all of the technology available to them without barriers. The children should experience global learning and communicate with others through collaborative projects. We must be educating our students to be the best "cyber citizens" they can be.

I have 2 children ages 15 and 11, boy am I being challenged :) I quess my husband of 17 years is pretty cool. I've kept him this long! I think I forgot what I enjoy, between working and my studies, Oh, yes, I love to teach. That is if three years as a substitute counts. Talk about flying by the seat of your pants, and I enjoy every minute of it. I think technology rocks. Especially with all the new toy's web 2.0 affords us. I believe in collectivism and shared learning experiences. I think student collaboration is an essential to a students develpment, espcially in middle school. I'm taking an online course entitled "Teaching in Networked Classroom" I'm hoping I can collaborate with others to see what they do in their classrooms. So far we've learned a lot, read a lot without a lot of time in between.

I graduated with a B.S. in Education and taught regular Ed in grades 2, 3, and 6th in a couple districts (with a move in between). I left and worked as a Training Manager for 15 years and a Project Manager for network engineers for a few more before returning to teaching as a Computer Technology Teacher. What I realize is the more I learn, the more I want to learn more.

Log into www.amazon.com
You may choose to work on either books, movies, music or video games.
Look to Left Column on the front page of Amazon -
Click on either Books OR Movies, Music & Games
Scroll down the page and look to the right
Click on Amazon.com Top 100 (at bottom it says all top sellers) or today’s top sellers

You must choose at least 10 books, video games, movies or CD’s.
Click on Book Name, DVD, video game or CD to bring you into next screen.
Find price information first at top of page.
Scroll down the page until you find Prduct Details.
Choose field type here that can be used with either radio buttons, popup menu, etc.
(Example - Rating ( G, PG, PG-13, R, R-17)) You could use radio buttons for this field.
At least 2 field types should be radio buttons, popup menus, etc.
Field Names should be as follows:
1. Name (Book, Movie, video game or CD name)

3. Show your database in the layout, browse format. Unclick the show multiple field.
(Print one page of this view with picture.)
Turn in both pages stapled together with your name on them.

Database - World Information

Database Lesson - Information from around the World

Objective: Students will use https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/index.html to research information about the world as well as countries within the world. They will compare the information they have gathered from 8 countries to the United States and the world.

Database Task:
1. Choose the World from the drop down menu. (go to #4)
2. Choose the United States from the drop down menu. (go to #4)
3. You may choose 8 other countries to compare to the world and the United States. Gather data related to the field names below.... from the website.
4. You must have the following items as field names:
Area
Geographic Coordinates
Location
Language - Most popular
Age Structure
Telephones
Airports
Population
You may choose any other 2 field items to use (flag colors, coastline, etc.)
5. You must have 10 total fields items to collect information for.
6. Of the 10 field items, you must use 4 different field types. (Ex: Text, Number, radio button, popup menu, etc...) 1 must be either a radio button or popup menu.

Practical Database Requirements:
1. You will create a database with the information you have collected about any country you wish to choose.
2. Once your database is complete, you should put it in list layout and sort by population.
3. Add a photo using the layout -layout mode.
4. Upload to Moodle.

One Step Further:
Write a short two paragraph (5 sentences for each paragraph) essay analyzing your data and answering the following questions. Compare and contrast each country to the world and to the United States. What is interesting or what did you learn from this exercise? What other information would you like to gather that you did not get a chance to include in your database? How would this information be helpful in a real world application?

Digital Citizenship/Safety

INTERNET SAFETY:

6th Grade
With 6th graders we use Netsmartz.
Netsmartz has great teacher resources as well as videos to play in class to discuss with students.
NOTE on videos: Always preview videos prior to showing in class. Some of the videos are a bit mature for 6th grade students and I sometimes show them to my 8th graders.

I have spent a lot of my personal time becoming certified on iSafe.
You must complete each training video in order to become certified.
Once you are done, you are given a wealth of downloadable lesson plans to use within your classroom.

7th Grade
With the 7th grade students, they have been exposed to Netsmartz already, so I like to use Cybersmart. Cybersmart has great printable curriculum that you can share with your students.

Along with teaching the students in 7th grade about internet safety, we also discuss anti-violence issues such as cyberbullying. I use a few different sites:

Students create a Public Service Announcement using Keynote to discuss cyberbullying or antiviolence issues.

8th Grade
With 8th grade, we discuss some more about what is happening today in the world of social networking and review all of the topics we discussed in 6th and 7th grade. The discussions can begin to become more mature and contain some important information using statistics.

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP

Along with internet safety, digital citizenship is of utmost importance today. Students need to know how to communicate with each other over the internet. They must follow rules. They need to know they can not write in slang and shorthand. They must take the responsibility seriously if they are going to be granted the privilidge to use the internet and collaborative learning spaces.

Animal Brochure/ Children's Book

ANIMAL BROCHURE/CHILDREN'S BOOK PROJECT

Using the internet and Word processing or Pages, you will:
Research an animal or sea creature

Project Requirements:
Tri-fold brochure or
Children's story (written to 4-5th grade level) - Cover and at least 2 pages of writing.
At least three pictures (obtained from the internet - need bibliography information for all pictures)
Use bullets, borders, lines, etc. to separate information in your brochure
One map of the city/country where your animal is found

My Hero

MY HERO

1. First I put out a journal entry for that day asking the kids to define a hero by using dictionary.com, then they need to answer the question, who are your heroes, and why?

2.. Start out with my hero website. Go to "getting started" and discuss with class.

3. I try to ask the kids the question during our discussion, "What is the difference between a hero and a celebrity?" Also, the next question, "Can a celebrity be a hero?"

4. Using this site, which is amazing, I then play them a video. I usually use this one : Perserverance.
Warning - Some of the videos are filled with some scary images for younger children. It is real life but shows death, etc. So, preview first if you are choosing a different video.

5. Once we have viewed the video and discussed, I then let the kids go on the website to this page:
Heroes.
The page is broken out into different categories of heroes, and I try to explain to the kids to try and choose someone who touches their lives some way. They should try to find someone new, and not a celebrity. If they want to, I do let them search for a singer or something if they can explain why they really admire that person and what good they do for others.

6. Lesson: (Word Processing Lesson)

What is a Hero??

Objective:

Upon completion of this lesson, student will be able to:
1. Know the definition of a hero.
2. Describe the characteristics of a hero.
3. Recognize a hero in a story.
4. Name heroes in their lives and express why they are heroes to them.
5. Use the internet and www.myhero.com to find real hero stories and choose one they find to be interesting.
6. Distinguish between a hero and a celebrity.

Directions:

When looking over all of the people mentioned as heroes on the my hero website, choose someone who makes an impression on you and you feel a connection to in some way.

Please answer the following questions about your hero in complete sentences (1-2 sentences each) using proper punctuation and grammar.

1. Name your hero. What information can you find about your hero?
2. Who is writing the story about your hero?
3. What are the heroes values? (What is important to them?)
4. What are some characteristics all heroes have in common?
5. What is the category you found your hero under? (Angel, Animal, Artist, etc.)
6. When looking over the list of heroes, do you see any celebrities?
What is the difference between a hero and a celebrity? Can celebrities be heroes sometimes?

Write two paragraphs about your hero and why that person was important to you. How has learning about your hero touched your life and in what way? How can each of us become a hero to someone in everyday life?

7. Once students have completed this lesson, another day, I will have them go back and format the document using wordprocessing formatting skills.

Employee of the Year Project

Employee of the Year Project Packet
Project Mission: As a team, elect a CEO (Chief Executive Officer). Be sure to select someone who is willing and able to lead your group to success! Everyone should keep this sheet for the duration of the project. If you are working alone, you are the CEO.

Project Outline: You have recently selected your “Employee of the Year” It is important to present the winner with a complete prize package. Each of the items must be included and EVERYONE in your team must produce and pass in a package that includes;

Cover Letter with a logo
(Part II)
Trip Expense sheet
(Part III)
Employee of the Year Award Certificate
(Part VI)
Digital photograph(s) used throughout packet?
PowerPoint or Brochure
Created
(Part VIII)

Part I – Explore these travel sites and select your trip destination and how many people (adults & ages of children) who will travel. Explore www.travelocity or www.expedia.com.

Part II – Write a cover letter using student-designed letterhead explaining the trip prize to the Employee of the Year.

Part III – Create a Trip Expense spreadsheet for all trip expenses. Include the following expenses: travel (air, train, bus, car rentals), lodging (hotel), meals, and Excursions (see part IV). You may spend as much money as you like on these trips although you must enter all expenses into your spreadsheet.

Part IV – Visit an on-line dictionary and look up the word Excursion. Find each of the following Excursions and record detailed information (by day) in your document. You must record six (6) excursions.
• One that lasts all day
• One, which takes your winners to a different island, or city
• One that takes you on the water
• One that serves dinner
• Two Excursions of your choice.

Part V – Add the Excursion expenses to your Trip Expense sheet by day.

Part VI – Create a Certificate for your Employee of the Year including: a signature line, “Employee-of-the-Year”, date, Company Name, Logo (same as the one in cover letter), and a watermark photograph of the CEO (see Part VII).

Part VII – Take a digital photograph of your CEO (handing the certificate to your winner).

Part VIII – Create a PowerPoint presentation or a brochure with your trip details. Include as many details, photographs (see Part VII), sounds and animations as you want. As the CEO your final activity will include presenting this presentation and handing our your final prize package to your winner.

Targeted Curriculum Standards(s) Use NETS or NHEON number(s) and description:
NETS – 5, 6 – Technology Research Tools
NEON 6.1.8.3 – Technology problem-solving & decision-making tools
Content Standards: Grade 8 – Reading Strategies Strand 1S, 1AB, 5B, 5C, 5N & Speaking 3B, 3L, 6A, 6G, 6I, 6AB
Targeted Proficiencies Use Student Outcomes \ Proficiency:
Students will understand how to access the Internet, read and use the prescribed worksheet, and present appropriate biography material to an audience in a round-table format.
Resources:
Computer with Internet Access and word processing software installed. Worksheet\Rubric. Prepared note cards with one CEO\leader names on them.
Procedures:
Part I – Students download worksheet from teacher’s web page (or have printed research worksheet available). Give the students a chance to read the sheet. Students then select a subject to create a quick information piece on. This is a good predecessor to “Employee of the Year” unit, as the students will portray a company CEO during this unit.
Sample Names could include (but are not limited to): Sam Walton, Oprah Winfrey, George W. Bush, Vince McMahon, Chad Hurley, Steve Irwin, Steve Wozniak, Steven Jobs, Dave Thomas, Bill Gates, Michael Bloomberg, Calvin (Richard) Klein, (John) Calvin Coolidge, Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen, Vera Wang, Ralph Lauren, W (William) T (Thomas) Grant, Ferdinand (Anton Ernst) Porsche, Dr. Seuss, David E. Kelley.
Part II – Students engage and complete worksheet. They should take as many notes (either manually or using a Word processor) as they need to present from.
Part III – Students sit in a round table environment (facing one another) and present their information from their seat. The goal here is to create a discussion like environment.
Part IV- Students collaborate and decide what the common denominator is for all of these biographies. Hopefully they will arrive at words such as; leader, CEO
Part V – Define “CEO- Chief Executive Officer” with class.

Instructional Strategies:
Discussion, Defining - Any activity that requires students or teachers to state the meaning of a word or phrase, Oral Presentation, Peer Questioning.
Assessment Strategies:
See attached Rubric for point values.
Essential Questions: Can the students work independently to research their biography subjects? Can the students identify what these people have in common? Do the students understand what a CEOs traits are?
Modification: Students working with aides can minimize data according to their IEPs\504s.

Spreadsheets - How Time Flies

MATH – 5A, Grade 8, Data Analysis & Probability Strand
NHEON (NH Educator’s Online) 6.1.5.2 – Basic Operations and Concepts
NETS – 3, 4 Technology Productivity tools
Targeted Proficiencies Use Student Outcomes \ Proficiency:
Students will understand the purpose and function of a spreadsheet and enter labels, values, formulas and function, and format data in a spreadsheet and chart.
Resources:
Computer Lab with spreadsheet software installed. One computer per student. InFocus projector and whiteboard for instructor use.
Procedures:
Part I
1. Students open a new spreadsheet such as MS Excel. Save it as “How Time Flies”
2. Students should create a header with their name, date and section on it for this spreadsheet.
3. Begin by reviewing the following vocabulary by utilizing the InFocus projector. Students should take notes. Identify these terms: Spreadsheet, rows & columns, worksheet, cell, active cell, label, value.
4. Students key in activities in column A. Make a list as a class of all the possibilities for their time. Activities such as school, eating, traveling, sports practice, and music lesson, watching TV etc. are good examples. Try to limit it to 20 – 25 activities. Be sure to have one contribution per student.
5. Students key in days of the week beginning in cell B2 with Sunday, B3 with Monday, continue through Saturday.
6. Illustrate how to preview page with grid lines. Center titles. Students should take care to enter in activity times as whole, half or quarter hour activities (1, .5, .25). Each day, they may only use 24 hours.
Part II
1. (At least one week later) One week later. Students enter in their results from their spreadsheets.
Part III
1. Insert a row at B. Enter in the number 24 and Edit, Fill, Right to fill in Sunday through Saturday.
2. Enter a formula at the end of the activity column like this 24-sum (B3…. B20). Edit fill right
3. Students should adjust their times within the cells so everything ends with a zero. Print.

Part IV
Illustrate how to create averages and charts to class.

Word Processing - If I Were in Charge of the World

Targeted Proficiencies Use Student Outcomes \ Proficiency:
Students will practice keyboarding and utilizing the TAB key while creating a simple word processing document.

Resources:
Computer Lab with word processing software installed. One computer per student.
Procedures:
Students should have completed Lesson 3 in order to be successful with this lesson.

Part I
1. Open a new MS Word document.
2. Students should create a header with their name, document title “I Were in Charge of the World”, and section#
3. Instruct students to type 8 lines of information on their ideas of what it would be like to be in charge of the world. Read the Judy Viorst Poem before they begin (page 11 in Computer Activities Through The Year).
4. Use paragraph form for this Part I
5. Students must print their documents prior to leaving the lab.

Part II
Demonstrate how to put their work in poetry format. Explain to students the meaning of the Tab key and show them how to use it. Stress to students the Tab key should be used instead of the space bar key. Although a document may appear aligned on the monitor, when a person uses the space bar key to indent, often times the document will not print aligned.

Once students are finished typing, have them spell check.

Finally, proof and print.

Instructional Strategies:
• Activating Prior Knowledge – to determine the level of their existing knowledge
• Active Learning – hands-on engages learners by matching instruction to the learner’s understanding and developmental level.

Assessment Strategies:
• Poem printout is accessed for 8 lines of text and proper use of the Tab key.

Brussel sprouts obsolete.

If I were in charge of the world
People would be more friendly,
School bus drivers would let us sing, and
Parents would have a bedtime!

If I were in charge of the world
All pets would have an owner,
People would think twice before they smoke,
Moms would have help around the house, and
Someone would find the cure for cancer.

If I were in charge of the world
Trash would be in garbage cans,
Popcorn would be free at the movies.
This world would be a much better place
If I were in charge of the world.
