Targeted Proficiencies Use Student Outcomes \ Proficiency:
Students will practice keyboarding and utilizing the TAB key while creating a simple word processing document.

Resources:
Computer Lab with word processing software installed. One computer per student.
Procedures:
Students should have completed Lesson 3 in order to be successful with this lesson.

Part I
1. Open a new MS Word document.
2. Students should create a header with their name, document title “I Were in Charge of the World”, and section#
3. Instruct students to type 8 lines of information on their ideas of what it would be like to be in charge of the world. Read the Judy Viorst Poem before they begin (page 11 in Computer Activities Through The Year).
4. Use paragraph form for this Part I
5. Students must print their documents prior to leaving the lab.

Part II
Demonstrate how to put their work in poetry format. Explain to students the meaning of the Tab key and show them how to use it. Stress to students the Tab key should be used instead of the space bar key. Although a document may appear aligned on the monitor, when a person uses the space bar key to indent, often times the document will not print aligned.

Once students are finished typing, have them spell check.

Finally, proof and print.

• Active Learning – hands-on engages learners by matching instruction to the learner’s understanding and developmental level.

Assessment Strategies:
• Poem printout is accessed for 8 lines of text and proper use of the Tab key.

If I were in charge of the world
I’d make weekends longer,
Doctor appointments shorter, and
Brussel sprouts obsolete.

If I were in charge of the world
People would be more friendly,
School bus drivers would let us sing, and
Parents would have a bedtime!

If I were in charge of the world
All pets would have an owner,
People would think twice before they smoke,
Moms would have help around the house, and
Someone would find the cure for cancer.

If I were in charge of the world
Trash would be in garbage cans,
Popcorn would be free at the movies.
This world would be a much better place
If I were in charge of the world.
